Personalized Privacy

Personalized Perspective

The whole point of internet was to widen our perspective on any topics that we may be interested/intrigued by. However, with "personalized perspective", that different perspectives we seek, is no longer available but is handed to us.

Personalized Perspective - (my definition) - is perspective that has been personalized, not by our own means, but by computer's calculations.

To me, the whole concept of internet has dramatically changed recently, as we get more "personalized", the things we read/watch on the internet is only confirming what we already knew. While internet is supposed to broaden our perspectives, it not longer does.

This seems to be part of a bigger picture, the big brother conspiracy (http://conspiracy.wikia.com/wiki/Big_Brother).

As Eli Pariser, stated that two people googling the same thing will have different results (http://www.ted.com/talks/eli_pariser_beware_online_filter_bubbles.html), I think that the idea of "personalization" is more than just marketing/business tactic.

For democracy to prosper, the difference in perspectives is crucial, however, with being "personalized" or filtered not by ourselves but by others, that difference perspectives diminish, and therefore democracy will diminish. It might be more convenient for us at the moment when we do the searches because it will provide the results we seek, it actually diminishes our ability to understand different ideas.

Barrack Obama's campaign's usage of social media and the likes of social networking.

I think that the campaign manager knew that the concept of social media networking was on the rise and that it can be incorporated into the campaign. In my opinion had the manager not used social media as a crucial part of the whole campaign, maybe we'll be saying Ms. President rather than Mr. President. Or had the social media not grown or blown up like it has, there is no telling what would have happened to Mr. President. As technology advances, people can not always stand by the old/traditional ways to doing things. The usage of SMS, aka text messages, was the perfect touch to promote the campaign as cell phones were becoming more and more popular, especially the text message feature. I remember when smartphones weren't invented yet, but more and more people got into text messaging each other. What a great way to get someone's attention and get to the point directly in a short amount of time.
People say that the best advertisement is the word of mouth. By getting more people talking about the campaign, it was bound to get more votes and more donations.
The campaign manager used the best old trick in the books and just incorporated the advancing technology.

Cyber Bullying and the pros and cons of the Internet

Cyber Bullying and the pros and cons of the Internet

From watching the first video, (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/kidsonline/), I believe that cyber bullying can be more dangerous/threatening to the victim, but I think that it's not necessarily all that bad. I am not saying that cyber bullying is not bad, but the results vary depending on the victim. Not all victims of cyber bullying are committing suicide or being scared to even leave their own house. As stated in the same video, the kids know better than what most parents would suspect. The victims don't necessary have to listen/read or even fall victim to the bullying. As we all know, the messages/instant messages/posts are delete-able, not to mention that it can be ignored. Unless it is a specific target, such as the case in the second video, http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6797340n .
Maybe it's because I have never been a victim of cyber bullying or never knew anyone personally that was a victim, but I don't have the sympathy for them as maybe I would had I known someone that was.

Pros and cons of the internet.
As mentioned in the first video, http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/kidsonline/ , I think the internet also has its pros. It seems like only the cons have/will always be displayed more than the pros. I guess it's just human nature that we discuss only the bad and not the good. As an example, in the video, Jessica, seemed to have figured herself out through the internet. I think that parents have to learn that the more restrictions they put on the kids, rather than trying to understand, puts more feeling going against them. Parents should also familiarize themselves with advancing technologies.
